First lady lends a hand at Norcross ministry

NORCROSS -- Sandra Deal took her job seriously.  She searched the shelves filled with Barbies, games of Chutes and Ladders and Candy Land and trucks to find the perfect gift for a child she had never met.

But Georgia's first lady worked hard Saturday to pick out the perfect Christmas present, as she volunteered with a few dozen others to pack Santa's sack for the Norcross Cooperative Ministry.  "That's the real meaning of Christmas, to serve others," Deal said.

In separate events across the state Gov. Nathan Deal and his wife worked at a food bank, visited an addiction ministry and fed the hungry in a program called "With a Servant's Heart." Sandra Deal said the first family hoped their efforts would inspire others to give back.

The Deals’ day of good deeds Governor and wife cap service schedule with hometown drop-in

The gifts are all wrapped and ready to be handed out at Good News at Noon in Gainesville.
All day Saturday, volunteers showed up to the ministry to help prepare donations for people in need during the holiday season.

"It will be like getting a Christmas present," said Edward Grant, pastor and director of the ministry.
Among the nearly 200 volunteers on hand were Gov. Nathan Deal and his wife, Sandra.

After A Day of Service that included four other stops in metro Atlanta, Deal concluded his day in his hometown. "I thought this would be a good place to wind up a day of service for me and my wife," he said.

Capitol Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony

Girl Scout ornaments in Washington, DC

Jane Hemmer Selected To Create the state of Georgia’s Ornaments
For The 2011 National Christmas Tree Display

Ornaments from all 56 U.S. states, territories and the District of Columbia to be displayed at the 2011 National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony in Washington, D.C.

Local sculptor, Jane Hemmer, with the help and expertise of John Amoss, Professor of Art at Gainesville State College and the Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia has been chosen by Georgia’s first lady, Mrs. Sandra Deal, to create the ornaments for Georgia’s tree for the 2011 National Christmas Tree display in President’s Park in Washington, D.C., the National Park Foundation announced today.

A local artist and local youth were selected from each U.S. state, territory and the District of Columbia to design and create 24 ornaments.  Twenty-three of the ornaments will be hung from the state or territory tree as part of the National Christmas Tree display in President’s Park.  One of the ornaments will decorate the White House Visitor Center Christmas tree, which showcases one ornament from all 56 states, territories and the District of Columbia.

“The decorating of the state and territory trees in President’s Park is a highly anticipated holiday tradition,” said Neil Mulholland, President and CEO of the National Park Foundation.  “We look forward to including Jane Hemmer’s coordination of the creations of Prof. Amoss and the Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia, representing Georgia during the 89th annual celebration.

As one of America’s oldest holiday traditions, the National Christmas Tree Lighting began on Christmas Eve in 1923, when President Calvin Coolidge lit a Christmas tree in front of 3,000 spectators on the Ellipse in President’s Park.  Since 1923, each succeeding President has carried on the tradition of what now has become a month-long event presented by the National Park Foundation and National Park Service.  In addition to the National Christmas Tree display, President’s Park hosts a variety of family-oriented holiday attractions, such as the Santa’s Workshop, nightly holiday performances, a Yule log, nativity scene, and model train display.

It is an honor to be selected,” said Jane Hemmer, President of Forensic and Fine Artists of Georgia. “I am delighted to have been asked by Georgia’s first lady, Mrs. Sandra Deal, to head up this project.  I am grateful to Dr. Martha Nesbitt, President of Gainesville State College for her aid, and to design creator, Prof. John Amoss, for their willingness to participate in this project.  Also, the help of the Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia is essential in making this ornament project a reality.  Their contribution is particularly important to Mrs. Deal and myself, because this year marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of Girl Scouts of America by Georgia’s own Juliette Lowe, who was herself a sculptor.”

Mrs. Deal, who is an important supporter of scouting, specifically asked Mrs. Hemmer for her aid because of her awareness that Mrs. Hemmer and Girl Scout founder, Juliette Lowe both loved the art of sculpting.  Mrs. Hemmer was fortunate to have acquired the design talents of John Amoss in creating an ornament that celebrates 100 years of scouting in the United States.

Four weeks of holiday events in President’s Park will kick off with the 89th National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony hosted by the National Park Service and National Park Foundation, the official charity of America’s national parks, on Thursday, December 1, 2011, at 5:00 p.m. EST. This year’s talent line up for the lighting ceremony will be announced in November.  Talent announcements, as well as other event details and a live web stream of the ceremony will be available at www.thenationaltree.org.

Easy Holiday Tips from the Georgia Governor’s Mansion

By Sandy Hu

Holly Chute was expecting 1,000 people for cookies and cider last night. And with more guests over the next two weeks, she will be baking 20,000 cookies this holiday season.

Holly is the Executive Chef of Georgia’s Governor Nathan Deal. And Sunday was the tree lighting ceremony at the Governor’s Mansion, with cookies and hot and cold cider for all. Whether it’s for a large public function as this or an official state dinner, Holly knows a thing or two about entertaining.

She has cooked for royalty including Prince Philip and Princess Anne of the United Kingdom, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands and Prince Hassan of Jordan; Presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton; many governors; and entertainers like musician Joe Cocker and comedian Jeff Foxworthy.

Nothing fazes this talented chef, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, who began her career as the Governor’s Mansion in 1981. She has worked for six different Governors.
A Servant's Heart is a day for Georgians to volunteer and act on needs within their own region. Join Nathan & Sandra Deal on December 17th by signing up for a volunteer opportunity near you. Together we can continue to make Georgia a state that cares! The first 500 volunteers will receive the Servant's Heart t-shirt!

Georgia's First Lady Visits Berrien County!

LAKELAND — Berrien County Middle School students shared what they are learning Thursday with Georgia first lady Sandra Deal and Georgia State School Superintendent Dr. John Barge.

“We thought it would be nice to visit here and see what was going on with your students,” said Deal, the wife of Gov. Nathan Deal. “We just love coming to visit schools and see what’s going on and encourage the students and encourage the teachers.”

Prior to visiting Berrien Middle, Deal and Barge visited Brunswick High School and a primary school in Cook County.

“We thought we need to find a middle school somewhere closer around and we thought that Berrien Middle School would be a good choice for us,” said Deal.

Deal and Barge toured the middle school and went into various classrooms. Both made a point to be very interactive with the students and the teachers.

“It’s really important for teachers to know that we support them,” said Barge. “It’s amazing how encouraged the teachers and the leaders are in the systems just by us showing up and saying we want to see what you’re doing.”

Georgia's First Lady back in her element with visits to Southeast Georgia Schools

By Terry Dickson

BRUNSWICK - It’s one thing to have a teacher peering over your shoulder in class, but Brunswick High students had Georgia first lady Sandra Deal and state schools Superintendent John Barge checking their work Thursday.

Brunswick High was the first stop on Deal’s and Barge’s tour of schools that included stops in Cook and Berrien counties later with Barge’s talk to the Georgia Association of School Personnel Administrators conference on St. Simons in the middle.

As their visit to Brunswick High wound down, Deal said, “It’s like throwing us in a toy store. We just had a great time.”
